Description

Polar expedition

A portfolio of Greenland expeditions across the island’s southern fjords, west coast icebergs, far-north communities and Viking heritage, with selected helicopter-supported exploration, Inuit cultural immersion and deep Arctic wilderness access.

Greenland is an Arctic world of impossible scale.

Its fjords cut deep into mountain country. Icebergs drift from glacier fronts into blue water. Coastal communities carry living Inuit traditions, while Norse ruins and Viking history reveal another layer of the island’s past. In late summer, longer nights may also bring the possibility of northern lights, adding a different atmosphere to the end of the Arctic season.

This collection brings together the major Greenland journeys of the Arctic 2027 season: helicopter-supported exploration in South Greenland, a rare route from southeast to west, two directional west coast itineraries focused on icebergs and Inuit communities, and a far-north expedition reaching toward some of the most remote settlements and latitudes in the portfolio.

For Exclusive Elite Travel clients, Greenland is the Arctic region where scale, culture and adventure meet most powerfully.

The Expedition Portfolio

South Greenland: Alpine Exploration by Helicopter

This 15-day expedition is the most helicopter-focused Greenland itinerary in the collection.

The journey begins in Reykjavik, Iceland, and concludes in Nuuk, Greenland, with charter flight arrangements from Nuuk back to Reykjavik. It operates aboard Ultramarine.

The itinerary focuses on South Greenland’s dramatic fjords, alpine landscapes and remote coastal communities. Its defining highlight is the possibility of landing on the Greenland Ice Sheet, a rare and powerful encounter with one of the planet’s great ice bodies.

Guests may also experience helicopter flightseeing above fjords and mountain systems, Zodiac cruising, hiking, kayaking, community visits, camping and a culinary immersion rooted in Greenlandic ingredients and Inuit traditions.

This is the Greenland choice for travellers seeking high-access adventure with a strong sense of vertical scale: sea, fjord, mountain, ice sheet and sky.

Southeast to West Greenland: Glaciers, Fjords and Viking History

This 15-day itinerary is designed for travellers who want to experience East, South and West Greenland in one continuous expedition.

Beginning in Reykjavik, Iceland, and ending in Nuuk, Greenland, the voyage operates aboard Ocean Explorer, with charter flight arrangements from Nuuk back to Reykjavik.

The route follows a rarely travelled path along Greenland’s southeast coast, around the greener southern tip and onward toward the glacier-carved west. It combines deep fjords, ice-choked bays, mountain landscapes, Greenlandic coastal communities, Norse ruins and two UNESCO World Heritage contexts.

This expedition is especially suited to travellers interested in the relationship between landscape and history: Arctic summer colour, Viking-era traces, remote settlements and glacial geography.

West Greenland: Discovering Massive Icebergs and Inuit Communities, Northbound

This 11-day west coast itinerary is designed for travellers seeking a concentrated immersion into Greenland’s most iconic ice and community landscapes.

The journey begins in Nuuk and ends in Kangerlussuaq, with charter flight arrangements to and from Reykjavik. It operates aboard Ocean Explorer.

Highlights may include Eternity Fjord, the rarely visited Itilleq Fjord, Ilulissat, Eqip Sermia and Uummannaq, bringing together some of West Greenland’s most distinctive ice, stone and coastal culture.

The route also crosses the Arctic Circle, adding a symbolic polar milestone to the journey.

West Greenland: Discovering Massive Icebergs and Inuit Communities, Southbound

This 11-day itinerary mirrors the northbound route in reverse, beginning in Kangerlussuaq and ending in Nuuk, with charter flight arrangements to and from Reykjavik.

Operating aboard Ocean Explorer, it is devoted entirely to West Greenland: fjords, tidewater glaciers, colossal icebergs, local communities and Arctic Circle geography.

The southbound direction creates a different travel rhythm, but the essence remains the same: close engagement with Greenlandic coastlines, ice formations, cultural encounters and one of the most visually powerful Arctic settings.

West Greenland: Exploring the Far North

This 16-day itinerary is the most remote northern journey in the Greenland collection.

The expedition begins in Nuuk and ends in Kangerlussuaq, with charter flight arrangements to and from Reykjavik, and operates aboard Ocean Explorer.

The route may reach toward 78° north latitude, travelling through regions associated with explorers such as Knud Rasmussen and Robert Peary. It is the only Arctic 2027 itinerary in this portfolio to visit the remote communities of Upernavik and explore the remarkable Smith Sound, where, on a clear day, Greenland and Canada may be visible on the same horizon.

This journey is for travellers drawn to remoteness, rare northern access, deep cultural geography and a more exploratory Arctic profile.

Ships and Expedition Expertise

The Greenland collection operates aboard two small polar vessels selected for access, comfort and field capability.

Ultramarine carries up to 199 guests with 140 staff and crew and has a PC6 ice classification. It is equipped with two twin-engine helicopters and 20 quick-deploy Zodiacs, making it especially relevant for South Greenland’s helicopter-supported itineraries, Ice Sheet experiences and remote alpine access.

Ocean Explorer carries up to 138 guests with 105 staff and crew and has 1A, PC6 ice classification. Its ULSTEIN X-BOW design, observation decks, Discovery Library, spa, sauna, outdoor Jacuzzis and Scandinavian-style accommodation create a refined platform for Greenland’s fjords and coastal communities.

Across the programme, polar specialists support guests through wildlife interpretation, glaciology, history, community context, photography and safe off-ship operations.

Greenlandic Culture and Culinary Context

Greenland is not only scenery.

Selected journeys include meaningful opportunities to engage with Greenlandic communities, Inuit heritage, local food traditions and storytelling. Culinary experiences may include dishes rooted in the surrounding sea and Arctic land, prepared with local ingredients and interpreted through the culture of the region.

On selected itineraries, guests may also experience community-based programmes, local partnerships and small-group immersion in Greenlandic landscapes.

What the Expedition Programme Includes

Inclusions vary by itinerary, vessel, suite category and departure, but the core framework may include:

A 3-in-1 polar expedition parka to keep

Loan of waterproof neoprene muck boots

Leadership by an experienced polar expedition team

Zodiac cruising and shore landings

Guided walks and hikes

Educational programming and expert presentations

Three meals daily, plus snacks

Complimentary select beer, wine and select cocktails during bar service hours and dinner

Coffee, tea and cocoa available around the clock

Basic Wi-Fi where satellite service permits

Taxes and port charges

Online photo journal after the voyage

Included hotels where applicable

Port transfers to and from the vessel

Entrance fees to relevant parks, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and historic sites

Optional activities vary by departure and vessel. They may include helicopter flightseeing, exclusive heli-landing, Greenland Ice Sheet experience, Greenland Camp experience, sea kayaking, paddling excursions, mountain biking, polar plunge, guided photography and culinary programming.

Extension Possibilities

Because many Greenland journeys are connected through Reykjavik, private pre- or post-expedition arrangements in Iceland can be added.

Options may include the Blue Lagoon, Reykjavik design and culture, Hveragerði, Seljalandsfoss, Skógafoss, Gullfoss, Reynisfjara black beach, the Golden Circle and other Icelandic natural landmarks.

Exclusive Elite Travel Perspective

For Exclusive Elite Travel clients, Greenland is the Arctic at its most architectural: icebergs like cathedrals, fjords like corridors, villages placed between sea and mountain, and history embedded in stone, settlement and oral tradition.

The choice between itineraries should be shaped by the client’s preferred balance of adventure, culture and geography. South Greenland is the most helicopter-led. West Greenland is strongest for icebergs and communities. The far north is the choice for travellers seeking rarity and remoteness.

This is expedition travel for clients who understand that true luxury in Greenland is not excess. It is access, time, interpretation and the privilege of entering landscapes that remain largely beyond ordinary travel.

A request begins with preferred travel window, desired region, vessel preference, suite category, appetite for helicopter-supported experiences and interest in cultural or culinary immersion.
